The establishment of a millet hub in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, offers several feasibility and 
advantages that make it a viable and valuable endeavor for the region. Here's an overview of 
the feasibility and advantages of this project in Trichy.

Collaborate with Tamil Nadu Agriculture University, Gandhigram Rural University, Trichy Agro Business Incubation Forum (TABiF), and the Department of Agriculture. 

To measure whether the project objectives are achieved, a results-based monitoring and evaluation (M&E) framework should be used. Below is a breakdown of each objective along with suggested key performance indicators (KPIs) and methods of measurement:

Agro-Biodiversity Conservation Through Restore Traditional Millet Cultivation

In India’s patriarchal context, women are often defined by their relationships with men—as wives, mothers, or daughters. This societal structure deeply marginalizes single women, a category that includes women who are never married, separated, divorced, abandoned, widowed, or whose husbands are missing (often referred to as “half-widows”). Also included are women living without their spouses for at least one year and single mothers. These women face numerous challenges including violence, exclusion, limited access to services, and systemic denial of rights.

Their status renders them vulnerable within their families and communities. Due to widespread patriarchal norms, single women are often denied access to property, inheritance, secure employment, and social recognition. They are seen as incomplete or burdensome, and their economic and social needs are commonly neglected. Although some policy measures, like the 2016 Draft National Policy for Women and Tamil Nadu’s 2021 policy on single women, acknowledge their vulnerability, implementation remains limited.

Among single women, those with adult sons face unique challenges. There is a societal assumption that sons will provide support, leading to the denial of welfare benefits and ignoring the woman’s independent identity and needs. This reinforces the stereotype that single women cannot exist autonomously.

AHIMSA Farmers Producer Company is established to support member farmers in the direct marketing of goats without intermediaries. The company aims to improve farmers’ income by creating a transparent, fair, and organized market system for goat producers.

Measurement of Project Objective Achievement

Old widows may have limited knowledge or physical ability to manage animal health, which could lead to higher mortality rates and financial loss.

The Goat Rearing Project aims to empower and uplift old widows in Vaiyampatti block by providing a sustainable source of income through livestock management. This initiative is designed to address economic vulnerability among widows.

Protecting Pollinators, Empowering People aims to improve the livelihoods of 100 rural women in Marungapuri Block through sustainable beekeeping while conserving pollinators and biodiversity. The project addresses women’s limited income opportunities and declining pollinator populations by linking economic empowerment with ecological conservation. Expected results include increased household income, improved crop yields through natural pollination, and stronger community awareness of environmental protection. The project is distinguished by its women-led, nature-based approach that combines skills training, shared resources, and ongoing technical support for long-term sustainability.


The end date marks project completion, including all tasks, activities, and deliverables. For example, all performances, reports, and final activities are finished, and the project is officially concluded.

The project “Protecting Pollinators, Empowering People” will be implemented through strategic collaboration with government institutions, academic partners, and like-minded civil society organizations to ensure technical excellence, sustainability, and long-term impact.

The Department of Horticulture will provide technical guidance on flowering crops, seasonal nectar and pollen sources, and pollinator-friendly horticultural practices. Their support will help align beekeeping activities with crop cycles, improve pollination efficiency, and enhance agricultural productivity.

The Department of Agriculture will contribute extension services and technical expertise on integrating beekeeping with existing farming systems. This includes promoting reduced and safe pesticide use, encouraging climate-smart agricultural practices, and supporting farmers in maximizing crop yields through natural pollination.

The Forest Department will support biodiversity conservation efforts by advising on the protection of natural habitats, native flora, and forest ecosystems that serve as critical forage and nesting areas for pollinators. Their involvement will strengthen environmental awareness activities and encourage the conservation and planting of nectar- and pollen-rich tree species.

Universities and academic institutions will contribute research-based knowledge, training support, and monitoring expertise. Their involvement will help improve beekeeping practices, assess ecological and socio-economic impacts, document best practices, and support learning through field studies, student engagement, and technical evaluations.

In addition, the project will collaborate with like-minded NGOs experienced in women’s empowerment, livelihoods development, and environmental conservation. These organizations will support community mobilization, training facilitation, mentoring, and follow-up, ensuring inclusive participation and strong community ownership.

Together, these partnerships create a multidisciplinary support system that strengthens implementation quality, promotes innovation, and ensures the project delivers sustainable economic and ecological outcomes for women, communities, and pollinator ecosystems.

Ongoing technical visits and monitoring reports will help identify challenges early and allow for adaptive management. Mid-term and final evaluations will compare outcomes against baseline data and project objectives.

By combining data-driven measurement with participatory feedback, the project will ensure accountability, learning, and continuous improvement, while clearly demonstrating impact on women’s livelihoods, agricultural productivity, and pollinator conservation.

Another challenge is limited prior experience in beekeeping among participants. As many women may be first-time beekeepers, there is a risk of hive mismanagement or colony loss in the early stages. This risk will be addressed through hands-on training, simple and practical learning methods, protective equipment, and ongoing technical support and mentoring.

Pest and disease outbreaks affecting bee colonies also pose a risk. Regular monitoring, early detection, and training on safe, non-chemical control methods will help minimize losses and maintain hive health.

Market access and price fluctuations may affect income generation from honey and beeswax. To reduce this risk, the project encourages collective marketing, value addition, quality improvement, and linkages with local buyers and cooperatives.

Social and time-related constraints may also challenge women’s participation due to household responsibilities or cultural norms. Flexible training schedules, local training locations, and group-based approaches will be used to ensure inclusive participation.

Finally, environmental risks, such as pesticide use in nearby farms or habitat degradation, could threaten pollinator safety. The project will collaborate with agriculture and forest departments and conduct community awareness programs to promote pollinator-friendly practices.

Overall, while risks exist, the project’s integrated design, strong technical support, community engagement, and partnerships ensure resilience and adaptability, increasing the likelihood of successful and sustainable outcomes.

“Protecting Pollinators, Empowering People” promotes sustainable beekeeping, supporting rural communities with training, equipment, and technical support to boost income, food security, pollination, and biodiversity.

The region experiences a tropical climate with moderate to high temperatures and well-distributed rainfall, creating an environment conducive to the growth of diverse flowering plants throughout the year. These floral resources, including crops, orchards, wildflowers, and forest species, provide abundant nectar and pollen sources essential for the sustenance and productivity of bee colonies. The continuous availability of forage helps maintain strong hives and supports regular honey production, minimizing periods of scarcity that often affect other regions.

The agricultural profile of Marungapuri Block further enhances its suitability for beekeeping. Farmers cultivate a variety of crops such as paddy, groundnut, sugarcane, pulses, millets, and horticultural crops. Many of these crops benefit significantly from natural pollination, which increases yield, fruit quality, and overall productivity. Integrating beekeeping into local farming practices not only contributes to pollinator conservation but also strengthens the economic well-being of rural households by boosting crop output. The introduction of sustainable beekeeping practices can generate additional income through the sale of honey, beeswax, and other bee products, providing a viable livelihood option for women, youth, and land-poor families who may not have access to other income sources.

Marungapuri Block also has favorable ecological conditions for beekeeping. The proximity to forested areas, hills, and uncultivated lands provides natural habitats that support bee diversity and contribute to ecological balance. The area’s relatively low levels of industrialization and minimal chemical pesticide usage ensure a safe and healthy environment for maintaining bee colonies. This ecological safety not only protects bees but also enhances the quality and purity of honey and other hive products, which can command higher market value.

In addition to ecological and agricultural advantages, the socio-economic context of Marungapuri Block supports beekeeping initiatives. By promoting eco-friendly livelihoods, we reduce dependence on environmentally harmful practices and encourage responsible land use, reduced chemical inputs, and conservation of natural habitats.

These two themes are deeply interconnected in our approach. By empowering people with nature-based livelihood solutions, we demonstrate that environmental conservation can be a driver of economic prosperity rather than a barrier to development. Communities become active stewards of biodiversity when their well-being is directly linked to healthy ecosystems. This integrated approach allows us to address poverty, environmental degradation, and climate challenges simultaneously, creating lasting impact for both people and the planet.

The primary target group of this project is women from rural and marginalized communities, particularly those facing limited access to stable income opportunities, skills training, and productive resources. These women often play a central role in household food security, family well-being, and community cohesion, yet they experience disproportionate economic and social constraints. Factors such as limited land ownership, restricted mobility, unpaid care responsibilities, and lack of access to finance frequently prevent them from participating fully in local economies.

Women are specifically targeted because empowering them has a direct and lasting impact on household prosperity and community development. When women gain access to sustainable livelihood opportunities, they are more likely to invest their income in nutrition, education, healthcare, and the overall well-being of their families. Supporting women therefore creates a multiplier effect, improving outcomes not only for individual participants but also for children and wider communities.

Beekeeping is particularly suitable for women, as it requires minimal land, can be practiced close to the home, and allows flexible time management alongside domestic responsibilities. With proper training, protective equipment, and technical support, women can safely and effectively manage beehives, harvest honey, and engage in value-added activities such as processing and marketing. The activity also builds confidence, leadership skills, and collective organization, especially when women work in groups or cooperatives.

In addition to economic benefits, the project strengthens women’s roles as environmental stewards. Through beekeeping, women gain knowledge about biodiversity, pollinator conservation, and sustainable land-use practices. This awareness encourages the protection of natural habitats and promotes environmentally responsible behavior within households and communities.

By focusing on women, the project addresses gender inequality while promoting sustainable development. It provides women with skills, income, and decision-making power, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to local economies and environmental conservation. Ultimately, empowering women through sustainable beekeeping supports resilient livelihoods, stronger communities, and long-term ecological balance.
