Enablement Foundation (St. Enablement) ondersteunt kinderen met een neurologische beperking en hun families in ontwikkelingslanden. We bieden gezinnen en lokale partnerorganisaties op maat gemaakte hulpmiddelen, trainingen en ondersteuning. 

Te veel kinderen met Cerebrale Parese (CP) en hun families missen de informatie en ondersteuning die zij nodig hebben – zeker in lage- en middeninkomenslanden. Tekstuele bronnen en statische afbeeldingen schieten tekort. Daarom lanceren wij het project *Leren en Sociaal Media* – een initiatief van één jaar waarin we 60 korte, praktische video's ontwikkelen die gezinnen, veldwerkers en kinderen met CP echte handvatten, herkenning en hoop bieden.

De video's worden verspreid via sociale media en geïntegreerd in bestaande leermiddelen zoals de RehApp en ons bekroonde spel “Shift the Focus”. Door echte gezinnen en echte oplossingen te tonen, bouwen we aan kennis, verminderen we stigma, en versterken we een wereldwijd netwerk van ondersteuning – beginnend in Ghana, Ethiopië, Oeganda en Malawi

Met slechts €24.650 kunnen we meer dan 300.000 mensen bereiken en blijvende impact creëren voor een van de meest kwetsbare groepen ter wereld. Helpt u mee om CP-zorg en gemeenschap binnen handbereik van elke ouder te brengen?

Long-Term Impact

At Enablement Foundation, we partner with local organisations that have established and stable Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) programmes. These organisations are rooted in their communities and work to equip families, professionals, and community members with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to support children and adults with disabilities — particularly those with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs).
We work with four long-standing local partners across sub-Saharan Africa — in Ghana, Ethiopia, Malawi, and Uganda — who all demonstrate strong expertise in working with children with NDDs and share our commitment to locally led, sustainable development.
8.1 Our Local Partners
Multikids Africa, Ghana
Programmatic focus: Inclusive education and advocacy for children with disabilities.
Multikids Africa works to ensure that children with special educational needs and disabilities enjoy full participation in society — free from discrimination and poverty. Their work focuses on inclusive education, teacher training, community-based health interventions, and advocacy. Enablement Foundation partners with Multikids Africa due to their deep commitment to inclusive education and their practical work in both mainstream and specialist learning environments.
In 2024, Multikids Africa delivered training to hundreds of teachers and community health workers. In 2025, they aim to scale their inclusive education model, focusing on early childhood inclusion and improving school readiness for children with severe NDDs.
GAT Center, Ethiopia
Programmatic focus: Assistive technology and family-centred disability support.
The GAT Center provides children and young adults with disabilities — particularly those with NDDs — with assistive technology, caregiver training, and social inclusion support. They also work directly with mothers and frontline professionals to ensure children are included and able to participate in daily life. Enablement Foundation supports GAT due to their practical, community-level innovation and their strong track record in improving accessibility for families in under-resourced settings.
University of Gondar (UoG), Ethiopia
Programmatic focus: Academic-community partnership for disability inclusion.
The University of Gondar’s Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Programme, launched in 2005, is Ethiopia’s only university-led CBR initiative. Operating across the North Gondar Zone in the Amhara Region, the programme integrates academic research, medical expertise, and community-based action to support children and families living with disabilities.
Enablement Foundation works with UoG to bridge academic knowledge and grassroots practice — a powerful combination that not only serves immediate needs but also builds a foundation for scalable, evidence-based disability support. UoG's long-term vision includes expanding to additional regions and becoming a centre of excellence in CBR across low-resource settings.
Mangochi District Hospital, Malawi
Programmatic focus: Holistic hospital-based care for children with cerebral palsy (CP).
Unlike our other partners, Mangochi District Hospital is not a CBR organisation but a government hospital that is working to make healthcare for children with CP more holistic, inclusive, and accessible. In 2024, with co-funding from Wilde Ganzen, the hospital opened a new CP clinic staffed by a multidisciplinary team offering physical therapy, caregiver training, early identification, and assistive devices such as standing frames and rollators.
Enablement Foundation collaborates with Mangochi District Hospital because of their commitment to comprehensive care and willingness to innovate within the public health system. In 2025, we plan to initiate a pilot with a local CBR organisation in Malawi to bridge hospital-based care and community-based services — ensuring better continuity of care and deeper community engagement.
Katalemwa Cheshire Home, Uganda
Programmatic focus: Inclusive development and rehabilitation for children and youth with disabilities.
Katalemwa Cheshire Home works to ensure children and youth with disabilities lead dignified and productive lives. They provide both centre-based rehabilitation services and community-based inclusive development initiatives, grounded in a rights-based approach. They collaborate closely with families and local structures to ensure long-term support and integration.
Enablement Foundation values Katalemwa's commitment to both clinical excellence and grassroots inclusion. Their model of combining rehabilitation services with community involvement aligns with our goal of building resilient local systems that are both inclusive and sustainable

7.	Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL)
Our partners have highlighted a strong need to better assess and demonstrate the impact of their work. While they observe meaningful improvements in the daily lives of children with neurodevelopmental disorders, their families, and communities, there is a growing demand — particularly from donors and for advocacy with governments — for more detailed and systematic data.
In addition to external reporting, our partners are deeply committed to improving the quality and effectiveness of their programmes. To do so, they recognise the importance of robust data to support continuous learning, accountability, and informed decision-making.
In response, we began working in 2024 with our partners to co-develop a harmonised Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) framework. This framework is designed to:
•	Support consistent, evidence-based assessments across contexts,
•	Reduce administrative burdens,
•	And enhance programme design through ongoing feedback and adaptation.
To facilitate efficient data collection and analysis, partners have started integrating the monitoring functions of the RehApp tool into their workflows. Initial efforts have focused on setting up and tailoring the system to meet local needs. Full implementation of RehApp’s monitoring and evaluation components is planned for 2025, marking a significant step forward in building data-driven, outcomes-focused programming.
The MEL plan includes:
7.1	Key Components
•	Baseline and Endline Assessments: Using participatory tools with children and families.
•	Routine Data Collection: Via mobile tools and paper forms to track service delivery and outcomes.
•	Quarterly Reflection Sessions: Conducted within each country and shared across the region.
•	Stories of Change: Qualitative narratives from caregivers, children, and community leaders.
•	Cross-Country Learning Exchanges: Online and in-person peer learning forums.
•	Annual Joint Evaluation: Coordinated by EF’s MEL advisor with local support.
7.2	Cross-country indicators
•	Number of children accessing services (therapy, nutrition, education).
•	Number of caregivers engaged in support groups and IGAs.
•	% of health facilities with trained staff and functional referral pathways.
•	Changes in caregiver stress and knowledge levels.
•	Community attitude shifts measured via KAP (Knowledge, Attitude, Practice) surveys.

Risk Assessment and Mitigation Plan
1. Operational Risk
Risk: Delays in implementing programme activities due to logistical challenges, particularly in remote areas (e.g. setting up new CBR hubs in Ethiopia, piloting in Malawi).
Mitigation:
Conduct early, detailed implementation planning with partners.   Build buffer periods into project timelines.
Strengthen logistics coordination and hire local facilitators to reduce delays.

2. Capacity Risk

Risk: Limited capacity of local partners or frontline workers to deliver high-quality, consistent support (training gaps, high turnover).
Mitigation:
Use a phased training approach with ongoing mentorship.
Establish peer-learning networks.
Leverage the planned online training platform for continuous, scalable upskilling.

3. Financial Risk

Risk: Inadequate or delayed funding, especially for strategic add-on projects like the Malawi communication pilot or the training platform.
Mitigation:
Diversify donor base and align new proposals with funders’ strategic interests.
Create tiered project budgets to allow scalable implementation.
Prioritise and package high-impact components for targeted fundraising.

4. Social/Cultural Risk

Risk: Resistance to inclusion due to stigma, especially within faith-based settings or traditional communities.
Mitigation:
Engage religious leaders and traditional authorities from the start (as in Uganda).
Include disability-awareness training in all modules.
Share success stories to shift mindsets.

5. Policy/Systems Risk

Risk: Weak referral systems and inconsistent government engagement (e.g. integration with health systems in Ghana).
Mitigation:
Strengthen partnerships with district health offices.
Advocate for inclusion of disability in government M&E systems.
Document and share evidence of programme impact to build policy buy-in.

Children with NDDs in Africa face stigma and exclusion. Enablement Foundation builds local systems of care in 4 countries, empowering families and aligning with the UNCRPD and SDGs to ensure inclusion, support, and lasting change.

Advancing Holistic Care for Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders (NDDs) in  Sub-Saharan Africa

De goedkoste optie is importeren van een rolstoelbus. De organizatie is vrijgesteld van import belastingen. Het process is afhankelijk van de fabrikant en kan tussen 1 en 6 maanden duren. 

Het Grant Assistive Technologie (GAT) centrum in Gondar, Ethiopië is een kleinschalig revalidatiecentrum. 

Dit centrum bestaat uit:
-	Een revalidatiecentrum, waar kinderen met een neurologische beperking en hun ouders/verzorgers terecht kunnen voor verschillende soorten support. 
o	Dagopvang en therapie voor kinderen met complexe beperkingen uit Gondar
o	Intensief revalidatieprogramma voor kinderen en hun ouders uit afgelegen gebieden
-	Een werkplaats waar lokale hulpmiddelen worden ontwikkeld en geproduceerd voor kinderen met een beperking
-	Een naaiatelier waar ouders van kinderen met een beperking worden opgeleid en waar ook een aantal ouders werken. Dit atelier zorgt voor inkomsten voor het centrum. 

Het centrum werkt samen met het CBR-programma van de Universiteit van Gondar. 
Beide organisaties zijn partners van Enablement Foundation. 

GAT is opzoek naar een aangepaste rolstoelbus voor het vervoer van kinderen, hun ouders en hulpmiddelen. Op het moment moeten ze vervoer huren, dit is niet altijd geschikt voor de kinderen en is op de lange termijn ook veel duurder dan eigen vervoer. 


In dit project wordt er samen gewerkt met Universiteit van Gondar en Enablement Foundation. Enablement Foundation betaald nu kosten voor vervoer en dit bedrag mag gebruikt gaan worden voor onderhoud 
De universiteit van Gondar zal de bus ook gebruiken voor het vervoer van kinderen met een beperking in het CBR programma en bijdragen in de kosten van onderhoud

Gebruik van auto en hoe kosten van vervoer die nu gemaakt worden worden gebruikt voor onderhoud. Een plan om te zorgen dat auto vervangen kan worden 

Noodhulpverlening

Het GAT centrum is een kleinschalig revalidatiecentrum waar dagopvang wordt verzorgd en hulpmiddelen worden geproduceerd.  
GAT is opzoek naar een aangepaste rolstoelbus voor het vervoer van kinderen, hun ouders en hulpmiddelen.

Samen met onze partners in Afrika een toolkit ontwikkelen, en testen, waarmee ouders/verzorgers en mensen in de gemeenschap waar de kinderen wonen, beter kunnen communiceren met kinderen met een neurologische ontwikkelingsstoornis.

Our expertise spans a wide range of disabilities, enabling us to support partners in developing comprehensive, tailored solutions that address individual and community needs. By promoting a deeper understanding of disability and its root causes, we help reduce risks, strengthen inclusive practices, and foster more effective support systems.
We work with four long-standing local partners across sub-Saharan Africa — in Ghana, Ethiopia, Malawi, and Uganda — who all demonstrate strong expertise in working with children with NDDs and share our commitment to locally led, sustainable development.


We aim to grow our programmes with at least 15%; looking at number of children with NDDs, parents/caregivers and community workers. In the below table you will find the estimated numbers for 2025. Apart from these three groups we also target other stakeholders, like siblings, (national/local) government officials, community members, service providers and other relevant service providers.
