The establishment of a millet hub in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, offers several feasibility and 
advantages that make it a viable and valuable endeavor for the region. Here's an overview of 
the feasibility and advantages of this project in Trichy.

To measure whether the project objectives are achieved, a results-based monitoring and evaluation (M&E) framework should be used. Below is a breakdown of each objective along with suggested key performance indicators (KPIs) and methods of measurement:
1. Increased Millet Cultivation
Objective: Expansion of cultivation areas and improved yields per hectare.

Hectares of land under millet cultivation (baseline vs. endline).

AHIMSA Rural Millet Hub in Trichy -ARaMH

In India’s patriarchal context, women are often defined by their relationships with men—as wives, mothers, or daughters. This societal structure deeply marginalizes single women, a category that includes women who are never married, separated, divorced, abandoned, widowed, or whose husbands are missing (often referred to as “half-widows”). Also included are women living without their spouses for at least one year and single mothers. These women face numerous challenges including violence, exclusion, limited access to services, and systemic denial of rights.

Their status renders them vulnerable within their families and communities. Due to widespread patriarchal norms, single women are often denied access to property, inheritance, secure employment, and social recognition. They are seen as incomplete or burdensome, and their economic and social needs are commonly neglected. Although some policy measures, like the 2016 Draft National Policy for Women and Tamil Nadu’s 2021 policy on single women, acknowledge their vulnerability, implementation remains limited.

Among single women, those with adult sons face unique challenges. There is a societal assumption that sons will provide support, leading to the denial of welfare benefits and ignoring the woman’s independent identity and needs. This reinforces the stereotype that single women cannot exist autonomously.

The Goat Rearing Project aims to empower and uplift old widows in Vaiyampatti block by providing a sustainable source of income through livestock management. This initiative is designed to address economic vulnerability among widows.

Around 120 school-going children from Vaiyampatty Block of Trichy district, aged between 6-14 years, from underserved households have been identified to participate in this initiative. This will benefit at least 90 families and communities striving for improved educational opportunities and socio-economic development (in two panchayats viz. Palayakottai and Pudukottai from where children likely to participate


School-going children in the drought prone district of Trichy Suth often face significant educational challenges due to limited access to resources, including outdated or insufficient learning materials and technology. Manapparai, especially the Vaiyampatty Block in Trichy district is our working area. Quality teachers are often scarce in these areas, leading to larger class sizes and less personalized support and guidance. Moreover, the lack of extracurricular activities deprives these children of opportunities to explore diverse interests and develop essential life skills outside of traditional academics. These factors collectively contribute to disparities in educational outcomes between rural and urban students, more so in drought-prone areas like Vaiyampatty, highlighting the urgent need for targeted interventions to support rural education. Though the literacy rate of Trichy city (urban area) is 91.38%, the Female literacy rate is 88.01% the rural literacy rate is below 65% and female literacy rate is still lesser 26.9% compared to the city literacy rate.

This proposal aims to introduce supplementary after-school classes tailored specifically for school-going children, residing in and around Vaiyampatty, addressing the significant educational disparities they currently face. By offering additional learning opportunities beyond regular school hours, we aim to enhance academic performance, foster critical thinking skills, and provide a supportive environment for holistic development. These after-school classes will focus on core subjects and include enrichment activities to broaden their educational experience. Through partnerships with local communities, panchayats, and schools, this initiative seeks to empower rural children with the tools and resources necessary to succeed academically and beyond.


Explanation of theme:
The ultimate goals of the proposed project are: 
•	To improve academic performance and comprehension among rural children.
•	To foster critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
•	To provide a supportive learning environment beyond regular school hours.
•	Promote community engagement in child development.
•	To motivate and develop concern over nature
•	To educate natural resource management through participatory rural appraisal on water resource mapping and bio-diversity mapping

The specific objectives are:

	To develop and offer tutoring in core subjects (e.g., Mathematics, Science, Language Arts).
	To facilitate enrichment activities (e.g., arts, sports, life skills).
	Partner with local schools and communities to form eco clubs to ensure sustainability.

Based on needs assessment carried out between June 2023 and March 2024, AHIMSA has identified specific educational deficits and challenges faced by the school-going children in Vaiyampatty Block of Trichy district, particularly among the poorer households. Based on this, a structured approach has been developed that would include engaging sessions aimed at enhancing foundational understanding. Tailored lesson plans and training modules are designed to meet the specific needs of rural children, employing interactive methods and hands-on learning to create a supportive environment that boosts academic performance and confidence.
