Biodiversity Conservation Organization  works to conservation of biodiversity hot spots in Kenya through habitat restoration, tree planting,  Agroforestry,  holistic nature, conservation,enhancing education,climate action & capacity building

The project will be completed on December 2028 but it can be extended depending on the need of the local communities

Deforestation is a major source of CO2 emissions not only here in Kenya but worldwide. Kenya’s forest cover was reduced from 4.9 million ha in 1990 to 1.8 million ha in 2015, translating into a loss of 3.1 million ha in 25 years. Deforestation in Kenya, which is occurring faster than reforestation, afforestation & agroforestry, is a significant contributor to carbon emissions, estimated to be 20% of total emissions compared to 10% from planes & cars. Kenya, just like other countries in the world, continues to feel the impacts of climate change. Given that adverse effects such as climate variability and change continue to be observed, the livelihoods of farmers continue to be compromised.

High levels of Poverty have leads to extraction of forest resources at rates which often exceed replenishment rates. The result is a degraded environment which cannot satisfy the needs of the current population not forgetting threatening the existence of mankind & animal’s future needs. That being said, Globally, one of the promising applications of agroforestry is in assisting communities to not only cushion themselves but also adapt to the negative impacts of climate change. Without doubt, agroforestry presents a possible solution to combat negative impacts of climate change but in different parts of Kenya, barriers to agroforestry practice adoption exist including a lack of technical expertise and resources, inadequate policy support, and conventional farming practices are prominent. 

Even though Agroforestry provides numerous benefits, such as improving air quality by filtering pollutants, reducing noise pollution, and providing habitat for wildlife and is one of the most effective strategies for enhancing carbon sequestration but Majority of the local communities/ farmers are unaware of the benefits of agroforestry and experience difficulties in obtaining reasonable inputs such as seeds and seedlings and as a result, the forest cover in different parts of Kenya has significantly reduced. 

Moreover, pressure on the remaining forests and trees is high & people depending up on them for firewood ,non-timber products is quite high and as a result land degradation, high carbon emission and global warming has affected many permanent rivers that have never dried up since time in memorial now drying up and affecting under water species like fish and other water dependant creature. Agroforestry in Kenya if adopted properly can help combat deforestation by integrating trees into agricultural systems, improving soil health, and increasing food security. By providing alternative income sources and ecosystem services, agroforestry will reduce pressure on natural forests while boosting farmer livelihoods.

The aim of the project is to reduce and reverse the trend of deforestation, climate change & emissions of GHG by agriculture through the recovery of already deforested areas and strengthening the local communities coping mechanisms.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
-To promote awareness among 15,000 local communities of the value and importance of Agroforestry
-To establish an Agroforestry nursery & demonstration centre, where over 250,000 -500,000 will be propagated  every year

 -To plant 250,000 Agroforestry & multi-purpose tree seedlings on per year enhancing habitats for both local communities and different animal species

-To promote awareness among 5,000 school children & 350 teachers of the value and importance of Agroforestry (planting trees, including fruit tree and tree lots) for different purposes; how to raise and tend tree seedlings and ways of integrating trees into farming systems through the production and dissemination of public awareness materials.

-To enhance capacity of 1,500 farming households in Kiambu County and surrounding areas to apply appropriate technologies and sustainable farming practices (including: composting, soil & environmental conservation through awareness and training workshops, information dissemination and extension services.

-To enhance rural livelihoods by increasing agricultural productivity, diversifying income sources, and reducing vulnerability to climate change through agroforestry.
 
-To Strengthen local capacity through training, knowledge sharing, and community participation on Agroforestry, climate change mitigation & environmental conservation.


EXPECTED OUTCOMES
-At least 250,000 agroforestry & other restoration trees are planted annually.

-180,000 copies of Information, Education & Communication (IEC) are produced & distributed

-The project will reduce & reverse the trend of deforestation, climate change & emissions of GHG by agriculture through the recovery of already deforested areas & strengthening the local communities coping mechanisms.

15,000 local communities, 5,000 school children & 350 teachers are empowered on concepts of Agroforestry & nature conservation

-Agroforestry will enhance wildlife habitats by integrating trees into agricultural systems & improved livelihoods.

We will Collaborate with local government agencies, schools , local communities & donors communities to leverage resources, expertise, and community networks.

-Before project implementation, baseline data will be collected to establish a reference point. This includes information on soil fertility, water retention, biodiversity levels, and crop yields.

-The number of schools targeted by the project will successfully integrate Agroforestry & environmental conservation education modules into their curricula.

MITIGATION MEASURES
The project will work with nursery staff with strong technical experience in restoration activities; The project aims to introduce an adaptive management approach, giving local communities the tools, capacity and information to adapt to change, and to be able to overcome challenging conditions; The project will engage related agencies in project governance and include them among beneficiaries as appropriate; the project will Promote cooperative arrangements between beneficiaries and include them in capacity building activities. Other measures that will be undertaken are the promotion of sustainable land management practices that specifically address adaptation to climate variability, and land use planning that analyses zones of vulnerability and develops local strategies for adaptation to these risks.

Deforestation & climate change in Kenya have significantly increased temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, reduced biodiversity, disrupting ecosystems, affecting livelihoods, particularly for communities reliant on natural resources.

Kenya is a country in Africa, known for the Great Rift Valley and diverse wildlife. It has a population of 57.5 million, making it the 26th largest country in the world.Kenya’s population is very diverse and home to most of Africa’s linguistic and ethnic groups. There are believed to be at least 42 communities, although Nilotes (30%) and Bantus (67%) account for a majority, followed by Cushitic groups, Arabs, Indians, and Europeans.

Procuring materials for establishing agroforestry, tree planting nurseries, and demonstration sites is crucial for successful implementation and long-term sustainability of these initiatives. This will ensure access to high-quality planting stock, promotes efficient nursery operations, and provides a platform for training and learning. These materials will include, fencing poles, greenhouse poles, greenhouse rafters, greenhouse roof net, Nails (4inches), Ceiling Nails, goat manure, tree planting poly bags & 2 x 2 timber

Materials for establishing Agroforestry, tree planting nursery & demonstration site are Purchased

To effectively combat climate change & poverty through agroforestry, we will first focus on establishing an agroforestry/forest restoration nursery that will supply native tree species for planting alongside crops. Establishing an agroforestry nursery and demonstration centre will provide several benefits, including supplying high-quality seedlings for agroforestry projects, educating farmers and communities about agroforestry practices, and promoting sustainable land use. It will also support the domestication of indigenous trees and enhances biodiversity. Here over 250,000 tree seedlings will be propagated and distributed to the local communities for planting annually. The nursery will not only provide trees but also serve as educational centres where farmers, school children, youths teachers and the local communities in general will learn about agroforestry, afforestation, reforestation, climate change mitigation, water and soil conservation practices, environmental conservation and their benefits.

250,000 Assorted seeds/seedlings for Agroforestry nursery & demonstration site/ centre are Procured

Appropriate materials on agro forestry, forest restoration, sustainable agricultural, nursery establishment, nursery care, tree planting, forest management, will be prepared for school children, environmental teachers and the local communities. The materials will include posters, flayers and brochures covering a wide range of environmental information and facts that will be presented in simple language with the aid of photos and relevant figures. Information, education and communication (IEC) for promoting good governance around natural resource management will be developed. These education materials will be distributed during the training workshops. Most of these materials will be written in Swahili & simple English language so as to facilitate stakeholders understanding and participation. The school children and local community will get basic knowledge on forest as well as nature conservation with the help of these education materials.

180,000 copies of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials are produced for distribution to the local communities

Monitoring agroforestry tree seedlings is crucial for several reasons, including ensuring seedling survival, identifying and addressing potential threats, and adapting management practices. It will help in determining the success of an agroforestry project, informs future decisions, and will lead to improved outcomes for both the trees and the crops they are integrated with.

Monitor & conduct survival audit of the planted trees

Lack of environmental education programs for the local communities is a critical problem in Kenya today and across Africa in general. Due to this the local communities fail to manage and conserve natural resources for a better future which also threatens the sustainability of conservation efforts carried out by the government, NGOs and development partners. We will conduct 15 days trainings to develop the capacities of 20 stake holders, 20 local leaders, 30 teachers & 20 local youths empowering them with tree planting skills. Topics covered during the 15 days training will include; nurseries preparations, seedling selection, seedling transplanting, seedling watering, seedling protection, tree identification and biology, participatory forest management, best grazing practices, re-planting, forest degradation, alternative fuel sources e.g. bio-mass, on-farm planting, soil protection, water conservation, global warming, climate change, proper pruning and afforestation activities. 
After this capacity building workshops, these stake holders will have been empowered on establishing, planning and coordinating agro forestry and sustainable agricultural practices. Our capacity building and training efforts on the local communities are designed to engage them because they will eventually become the stewards of the agro forestry and sustainable agricultural projects in the long term. They will also learn indigenous processes that maintain ecological balance and how these can be respected and sustained for continued accrual of benefits from the forest ecosystem. They will be empowered and guided on how they can plant quick growing tree seedlings that can be used as animal feeds too. Too, they will be empowered on how they can establish quick growing fruit tree forests in their farms. This will help to sequence the carbon and mitigate the effects of global warming and climate change resulting from habitat degradation.
After the 15 days training, they will have ample knowledge that will help them to establish sustainable tree nurseries that will help them conduct afforestation activities within their lands and schools to help in increasing the forest cover and avert the effects of climate change. Too, they will be able to sell some of the tree seedlings to other local community members thus generate much needed income and hence help in tackling poverty within the region.


Capacity building & Sensitization workshops for 20 stake holders, 20 local leaders & 30 teachers, 20 local youths are organized

Empowering local farmers with agroforestry practices, tree planting nurseries, and climate change mitigation efforts offers numerous benefits for both the environment and human well-being. It improves soil health, enhances biodiversity, increases agricultural yields, mitigates climate change, and provides local communities with sustainable livelihoods
We will Organize workshops and other training activities (farm visits, study tours and dissemination of information and technical training materials) on appropriate agroforestry & sustainable farming practices, including: soil and water conservation, integrated soil fertility management, composting, systems and integrated pest management).We will Offer technical assistance, regular monitoring visits, and mentoring to over 1,500 farmers annually to ensure successful implementation and address challenges.


1,500 Farmer empowered with agroforestry & sustainable farming practices

The focus of this component will be to build pupils, teachers and parents awareness campaigns, participation and support of the project. We will organise awareness raising on the potential and benefits of sustainable fruit growing, agroforestry (including tree growing) and to 5,000 school children and 350 teachers on environmental conservation & school greening initiatives.

This programme does acknowledge the importance of raising environmental awareness among primary school kids so as to ensure their participation in measures to protect preserve and sustain the environment and its resources. The overall aim is to create an environmentally active generation for sustainable development. In the course of the project over 5,000 pupils from 10 local primary schools will be provided with skills and knowledge on, agroforestry, tree planting, reforestation, and related environmental issues using the primary school setting.
The 5,000 school children from villages nearby the project will be sensitized on tree planting programs so that they can grow up with affinity to care for the forest and nature in general. The education/training will involve presentations, questions and answers sessions as well as comments and recommendations from school children and their teachers. The training will be aimed at preparing the primary schools’ children to correctly establish tree nurseries within their respective schools, raise trees, plant trees and continuously take care of them for future benefits. We will also impart climate change knowledge and raise awareness about climate change problem to these children through, climate change debates, discussions to help them learn more about the impacts of habitat degradation and how this can be addressed. At the end of the education session, the school environmental club will be formed at each school basing to act positively towards environment protection and to be school environmental watchdogs.
To develop a tree planting culture for schools, the project will encourage schools to set targets of the number of trees to plant every year. We will also train them to label the trees planted in the school compounds to help the children understand types of trees that are within their school compounds. This will motivate the children and increase their interest in forest conservation. Furthermore, this activity will provide an opportunity for children to practice outdoor environmental conservation activities through tree planting within their respective schools.  It is expected that educated and trained kids will continually have positive impacts and act as watchdogs to the environment at school grounds, residences and reserved areas hence help in the sustainability of the project.


School mobilization and awareness-building is conducted to empower 5,000 school children with environmental conservation education

Training local volunteer youths on agroforestry, tree planting nurseries, and climate change mitigation is crucial for several reasons. It will help empower youth to be active participants in environmental conservation, provides them with valuable skills and knowledge, and contributes to broader societal benefits like climate change adaptation and sustainable development. The youths will work hand in hand with the extension workers to help the local communities further the agroforestry and climate mitigation activities.

On the establish nursery, we plan to produce over 250,000 quality tree seedlings suitable for agroforestry and reforestation systems and distribute them to participating farmers and local communities.
 
Tree planting events will be organized throughout the year, inviting community members to participate in hands-on activities. Volunteers will receive training on proper planting techniques and tree care practices to ensure the long-term survival of the trees. We will also Facilitate access to improved seeds and seedlings including fruit tree seedlings. Over 250,000 Agroforestry tree seedling will be distributed & planting activities conducted annually After planting, we will educate the local communities about tree care including regular watering, mulching, and monitoring for pests or diseases. This ongoing care will be essential for the health and growth of the newly planted trees.

Distributing agroforestry tree seedlings to local communities will offer significant benefits for both the environment and the livelihoods of farmers. Agroforestry systems, which involve planting trees alongside crops, will enhance soil health, increase crop yields, and offer diverse income sources, leading to improved resilience and sustainability in rural areas as well as help in the absorption of green gas from agriculture.


Agroforestry tree seedling distribution & planting activities are enhanced

We will Conduct workshops, meetings, and awareness campaigns to engage local communities and stakeholders in the benefits of agroforestry practices. We will also Produce a video documentary about the project for outreach purposes
We will also Provide training programs to 20, extension workers, and relevant stakeholders on agroforestry techniques, including tree planting, intercropping, and soil conservation practices. To encourage participation, we will host informational workshops and outreach events to educate 15,000 community members about the benefits of tree planting and carbon sequestration. In addition to workshops, we will establish partnerships with local schools and organizations to create volunteer opportunities for students and community groups. These partnerships will not only help us reach our tree planting goals but also foster a sense of teamwork and collaboration among participants. By creating a welcoming environment for all ages and backgrounds, we aim to build a strong community network dedicated to environmental stewardship.


Training and Capacity Building is conducted to empower the 15,000 local communities on the concept of Agroforestry, climate change & nature conservation
